Secretary John Kemp of the Kansas Department of Transportation released his decision Tuesday to move ahead with plans for the proposed relocation of U.S.-56 highway through Marion County. The route will pass on the north sides of Marion and Hillsboro with a slight swerve to avoid the dam at Marion Reservoir.

Kari’s Kuties, a dance troupe of eight girls in Mary Ann Kohl’s School of Dance, won first place in Dance Caravan USA July 8-12 in Dallas. Members of the troupe are Stephanie Williams, Kim Nickel, Jean Ollenburger, Vickie Schaffer, Diane Bernhardt, Diana Kasnic, Kari Kohls, and Dawna Phillips.

Marion artist Les Byer has established a wide reputation for the items he and his wife Celia produce at the Flint Hills Clay Works. The store attracts many visitors to Marion throughout the year. Byer is concerned over loss of the highway through the community, for many of his customers are tourists.

Births announced this week were those of Stacia Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Williams, rural Florence, and Simon Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Makovec, Ramona.
