Downtown has a festive look for the holidays, thanks to the effort of merchants and Marion Chamber of Commerce. Workers for Creative Display of Manhattan are pictured installing decorative lighting on the C.B. Wheeler building roofline with the help of a city high bucket truck. Christmas lights are turned on from dusk until midnight with electricity provided by the city.

Russell and Joyce Hett of rural Marion are the new owners of Holiday Motel, located near the intersection of US-50/77 at Florence. The Hetts gave up retirement to take over operation of the 14-room facility.

Two students from Marion High School received national recognition this week and are being awarded $1,000 scholarships. Denise Sellers of Florence and Mark Meisinger of Marion have been named scholarship winners at the National 4-H Congress in progress in Chicago, Ill.

Bob Soyez dropped out of law enforcement in 1985 to return to school in order to further his education. Soyez is once again patrolling local streets, after Don Keazer was promoted to chief in November following the resignation of Bob Hoffman.

Four Marion High School basketball players were honored during last week’s Chapman Invitational Tournament. Mike Helmer won the free-throw shooting contest, Greg Tice was named most valuable player of the B-team tournament, and Randy Brock and Chris Vinduska were named to the all-tournament varsity team.
