A helicopter replaced the traditional stork as the vehicle for transporting the first-born baby at St. Luke Hospital. Loretta Crooks of Florence gave birth to a girl at 11:22 a.m. Jan. 6. The infant, later named Amanda Lyne Crooks, was airlifted by an emergency helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita around 3 p.m. when the 3-week premature baby had trouble breathing.

Marion residents will have the opportunity to vote on a proposed ½ percent sales tax in the April election.
Revenue from the sales tax would be used for street improvements.

Leon Suderman was sworn in Monday as Marion County Commissioner representing the First District.

Hallett Materials, formerly Hallett Construction Quarries, Inc., which operates several rock quarries in Marion County, has purchased Sunflower Crushed Stone quarry at Florence.

Barbara Longhofer of Marion was one of the officers selected during a reorganizational meeting of the board of directors of Prairie View, Inc., at Newton. She has been elected secretary of the Prairie View board of directors.

Tampa, A History of Tampa, Kansas, and Its Environs 1887-1987 by Edward Costello is now on sale. The 161-page softbound book sells for $10.40. It will be a good reference work, as well as enjoyable reading.

I Dare You awards have been presented to Mark Meisinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Meisinger, and Michelle Thole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Thole, two outstanding Marion County 4-H members for the past year.
