The towns of Tampa and Ramona celebrated their centennials with long parades and festive entertainment during the weekend, despite occasional soggy weather. Thomas P. Duggan and Tillie Hein were crowned king and queen of the festival at Tampa. King and queen at Ramona were Alex Brunner and Rosie Bura.

Ten students from Marion High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society May 5 in an evening ceremony at Kingfisher’s Inn. Inductees were Brad Tice, Phil Hanes, Ed Zeller, Diane Vantuyl, Chris Vinduska, Robin Summervill, Greg Tice, Lori Lalouette, Mark Meisinger, and Denise Sellers.

Les Byer, owner of Flint Hills Clayworks, was guest speaker Tuesday at the noon meeting of Marion Kiwanis Club.

Students at Florence Middle School named as winners of the Sheryl Bergeson Memorial Award for outstanding student achievement are eighth-graders Julie Sellers and Glenn Krispense and seventh-graders Jennifer Vantuyl and Alan Meisinger.

The first installment of the Marion County 1870 Census has recently been published in the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Register in Wichita. It was compiled by Raymond F. Wiebe, with most of the census originally taken by Alex E. Case of Marion Centre during the heyday of both the Santa Fe Road and the Chisholm Trail. The Santa Fe Railway entered Marion County, east of Florence, about one year later.
