Natalie Thies celebrated her 11th birthday Thursday with a swimming party and hamburger cookout at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Thies. Girls present were Mandy Hanson, KayLeah May, Angela Markley, Katie Moran, Jodi Smith, and KayLynn Summervill.

A come and go couples’ Corelle dinnerware shower at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Stenzel Friday evening complimented Deana Long and Larry Olsen. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Rocky Hett, Viola Kelsey, Mr. and Mrs. John Reznicek, Mr. and Mrs. Gail Whiteman, and the Stenzels.

Ninety adults and children enjoyed an old-fashioned Fourth of July Saturday afternoon and evening at Marion Country Club. The event included a swimming party, golf scramble, potluck meal, and fireworks.

A long line of residents attended the annual Independence Day picnic held Friday at the home of Bob and Shirley Smith. Some 125 guests signed the guest book and enjoyed potluck from a long table, along with other activities.

Texas A & I University geology professor Dr. John L. Russell has been honored with the 1987 Distinguished Teaching Award for his dedication and excellence in the teaching profession. He is a 1961 graduate of Marion High School and the son of Lysle and Faye Russell of Marion.
