City of Marion commissioners have rejected an invitation to purchase memberships in Sam’s Wholesale Club at Wichita, not following the example of Hillsboro City Council members who approved payment for three memberships in the Wichita discount store, Marion commissioners rejected the issue.

Our Savior Lutheran Church of Marion received a $2,500 grant from Aid Association for Lutherans and raised another $1,500 in donations to purchase the nativity scene for Central Park. Jack Applegate and Calvin Ridgeway constructed the stable with weathered lumber from an old barn donated by Bob Navrat. City crews helped set up the display and lighting.

Airman First Class Jay Sandwell is a member of the ‘first team” in the United States Air Force. The son of Kenny and Margie Sandwell of Marion, he was one of 30 airmen selected out of 1,200 to participate in the third Combat Challenge contest.

DuWayne and Jodi Suffield of Marion announce the birth of their first child, a son, Braden Wayne Suffield Nov. 19 at Salem Hospital, Hillsboro.

LaVerna J. Chaney of Florence won $5,000 last week in the Kansas Lottery. Chaney purchased six tickets Nov. 23 at Johnson’s General Store in Florence. She scratched the second of the tickets to reveal the largest prize won so far by a Marion County resident.
