The 17th annual Marion Lake Open Fishing Derby was held Sunday with the weigh-in at North Cottonwood Point boat ramp. This year 107 people competed. First place in the individual competition went to Mike Ewert of Wichita, a former Marion resident.

Births announced in this week’s issue include Matthew Charles, son of Brad and Rhonda Heerey of Wichita, born June 9 at CMA Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, and Steven Paul, son of Larry and Patricia Davis of Peabody, born June 8 at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

Vic Hanson was hired at Monday night’s school board meeting to be principal at Marion High School. Doug Huxman was hired as Florence Middle School principal. Two additional staff members hired were Jan Davis and Doug Vogel. Davis will be part-time kindergarten-sixth grade art coordinator and Vogel will be high school counselor.

Della Meier, manager of 1887 Olde Towne Kitchen in Hillsboro, is featured in a story by Matt Newhouse. The restaurant opened in February under Meier’s management.

Kristi and Kelli Enos, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Enos of Marion, received two of the three local scholarships awarded this year by Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society through St. Luke Hospital. Janet Herzet of Marion is the other recipient.
