A gigantic street parade with the theme “Marion Memories On Parade,” several class reunions, and a wide variety of entertainment are planned Sept. 24 for the annual Old Settlers’ Day festival.

Marion County Commission members voted unanimously Thursday to give all elected officials and department heads a $50-per-month raise retroactive to July 1. All other county employees were given a $25 raise in July, with up to an additional $25 based on merit.

Kristine Bateman, an eighth grade student at Florence Middle School, had a short story published in the September issue of Young Author’s Magazine. The fantasy story is titled “The Tale of the Wizards’ Apprentice.”

Practicing her hay-stacking abilities, Kristy Herbel is pictured as she slings bales as part of the Barnyard Olympics contest for Marion FFA sweetheart contestants. The winner will be crowned Friday during halftime at Marion High School’s first football game of the season.

Traci Darrow and Ashley Loomis have completed the advanced Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The advanced session included a trip to Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, for those students aspiring to be a part of the space program in years to come.
