Lucille Britain was elected chairman of the Marion County Commission at the regular meeting Monday.

Marion firefighters battled smoke and flames during a house fire Jan. 4. The house, located in the Eastshore community at Marion Lake, is owned by Jack and Coila Edson.

Leo D. Bezdek, a native of Tampa, now wears the wings and other distinguishing designation of a Delta Airlines captain. His promotion to captain follows an 11-year career on the flight line as second officer and first officer. Bezdek is based at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

Albert and Pauline Klenda will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary Jan. 22 with an open house at the Pilsen Community Center.

Winter homecoming at Centre is scheduled for Friday. Candidates for king and queen are Karen Vinduska, Robyn Makovec, Betsy Tindle, Kim Erickson, David Schneider, Robert McDonald, Trey Pontious, and Troy Heitfield.

Chamber of Commerce officers elected for 1989 and taking office Thursday are John Burke, president, Eloise Mueller, vice president, Jim Chamberland, secretary, and Gene Winkler, treasurer.
