For the first time in many years, hundreds of Canada geese are wintering in Marion County. The unseasonably warm weather earlier this winter, as well as the proximity of local lakes, ponds, and the federal reservoir, was apparently enough to convince them to stay.

Shari Plenert and Eric Pippin, seniors at Marion High School, were elected Queen and King of Courts by the student body, with the announcement made during half time of the Warrior-Knights basketball game Saturday.

Goddard High School had a ceremony honoring the 25th anniversary of its 1964 Class B boys’ basketball state championship. Marion Ogden, current head boys’ basketball coach at Marion High School was a member of the championship team, but was unable to attend the ceremony because of coaching duties.

Bryan Padgham and Tonya Heslet will represent Florence Middle School in the Marion County Spelling Bee. Cherie Savage will serve as alternate.

Marion Chamber of Commerce members Bud Hannaford and Gerry Harris are pictured presenting a “First Dollar of Profit” certificate to Judith Peters. Peters owns Jaconi’s restaurant with her husband, Earl.

Jayson Hanschu of Ramona has been listed on the president’s honor roll for the fall semester at Friends University in Wichita.
