Monday news broadcasts stunned the Marion business community when announcement was made that Duckwall/Alco had filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in federal bankruptcy court at Topeka. Company officials said the move was made to gain time to implement a strategic plan. About 52 stores will close across the nation, but the Duckwall’s store in Marion will be one of the nearly 100 staying open.

Marion School District employees were presented plaques Monday evening in recognition of their years of dedicated service to the district. Honored were Judi Stewart, 10 years; Linda Allison, 15 years; Jean Case, 20 years; Becky Summerville, 10 years; Pat Waner, 20 years; Marion Ogden, 15 years; and Rex Wilson, 25 years. Martha Phillips, who was not present, will receive a plaque for 10 years of service.
