Sen. Bob Dole, Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, and Rep. Bob Whittaker have introduced legislation in Congress to change the name of Marion Lake back to Marion Reservoir. This will eliminate the confusion caused by Marion County Lake and Marion Lake being so nearly the same names.

Susan Peters was speaker Sunday at Marion High School commencement. Announced as outstanding seniors were Robin Summervill and Edward Zeller. Micheal Greene, Jennifer McLain, Mike Meisinger, Sheri Plenert, Summervill, and Zeller were recognized for academic achievement. Lori Lalouette was named salutatorian and Phillip Hanes was valedictorian, pre-eminent in scholarship.

Three students from Marion, who received degrees from the University of Kansas Sunday, were Tammy Lynn Harris, daughter of Gerry Harris, Daryl Dean Herbel, son of Ron and Ruth Herbel, and Paul D. Loney, son of James and Leona Loney.

Lesley Sieger of Marion took second place in the statewide essay contest sponsored by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Sieger’s essay previously won first place in the county competition sponsored by the Florence chapter of WCTU.

Marion Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a dance June 10 to raise funds for the new highway sign at the junction of U.S. 56/77 and K-150.
