City of Marion commissioners met with R. Joe Durkin, vice president of Greeley Gas Co., Monday afternoon to discuss a plan for illuminating the new nature trail in Central Park with gas lights.

Edmund and Mildred Steiner and Mike and Elizabeth Vinduska will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversaries Nov. 5 with an open house at the Pilsen Community Center. The festivities begin with a social hour followed by buffet lunch and dance.

John Jordan entered his Jewell variety sweet potatoes in the Marion County Record produce derby this week. The sweet potatoes weigh up to 3.3 pounds each and “one will make a meal, including leftovers,” he said as he passed them out to members of the newspaper staff.

Christine Laue has been selected as Student of the Month for October by faculty members of Marion High School. A senior at MHS, Christine is the daughter of Harvey and Betty Sanders.

The Earl Hetts will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 29 with a family dinner at the Aulne United Methodist Church.

Candace Plett of Lincolnville and Beth Gaines of Peabody have been selected as writers on the staff of Kansas State Agriculturist, award-winning publication of the Kansas State University’s college of agriculture.
