Nine separate grassroots organizations from across Kansas have announced their commitment to a coalition to fight Fort Riley land acquisition.

Marion Country Club members and their guests will have their annual luau/swim party July 29. Committee members are Harlow and Edith Warneke, Elora Robinson, Jim and Joni Crofoot, Bill and Mickey Lundy, Earl and Louise Wood, and Don and Karon Hess.

Marion will be the home to at least two West Germany exchange students during the coming school year. Doug and Jo Helmer will host Wolfgang Schlichter, a student for Lathen, West Germany. Joyce Ford will host Melanie Hoop, a student from Neumunsper, West Germany.

Colonel Laura Jane Bredemeier, a 1951 graduate of Marion High School and a 1954 graduate of Wesley Medical Center registered nurse program, has retired after 26 years of exemplary service in the United States Army. In addition to receiving the coveted Legion of Merit award upon retirement, her other awards include two Army Commendation medals and five Meritorious Service medals. She is the daughter of Herb and Clara Bredemeier.

Enrolled children gathered in Central Park last week with T-shirts, tennis shoes, and other items to learn the art of tie-dying. The children were instructed by Pam Bowers.
