The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad is seriously considering abandonment of the branch line from Marion to Ellinwood, 88.4 miles of track which serves community grain elevators along the way as well as industries.

Cottonwood Valley All-Stars competed in the District Babe Ruth Tournament July 20-23 at McPherson. They lost the first round of play, won the second round, and lost in the third. Team members from Marion were Lucas King, Brian Loomis, Brad Druse, and Aaron Reiswig.

Brian Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers of Marion, has joined Valley View State Bank of Overland Park as assistant vice president and loan review officer.

Produce Derby winners this week are the children of Craig and Denise Matz of Marion. Jason, and sisters Alisha and Heather, are proficient at growing carrots—favorite food of Bugs Bunny.

Kiwanians spent Monday evening painting the picnic shelter at East Park. Following the work session, members enjoyed a cookout. Kiwanians also were busy repairing and weeding the Nature Trail in Central Park and joined the first group for hamburgers. The club spearheaded both projects when they were constructed and has volunteered to maintain them for the benefit of the community.

Marion Weber of West Germany has been a guest of Rocky and Shirley Jo Hett for about two and a half weeks.
