The city building, originally constructed as a WPA project during the Great Depression, was dedicated Feb. 3, 1939. Rededication ceremonies will be this Tuesday evening with the public invited to examine the newly renovated building.

An interview on this week’s front page tells of experiences of George Coe, who has returned from duty with the 82nd Airborne Division in Saudi Arabia.

Births recorded in this issue include Abigail Rosse Nielsen, daughter of Joe and Teresa Nielsen of Marblehead, Massachusetts, on April 30; Ryan William Smith, son of Craig and Janet Smith of Ozawkie, on May 5; and Miranda Lea Wilson, daughter of Kevin and Janet Wilson of Wichita, born May 6.

Marion High School seniors Melanie Kraus, William Teufel, and Matthew Hatfield have each received academic awards from Fort Hays State University and plan to attend the university this fall.

Maintenance supervisor Harry Bennett is pictured as he demonstrates location of stones on the tree of life at St. Luke Hospital. The metal tree contains a series of leaves mounted in Plexiglas, which bear the names of those who donate to the hospital foundation. Larger donations earn a name on a stone at the base of the tree.
