City of Marion commissioners decided Monday to negotiate a lease with Martin Eddy who plans to expand his Heartland Mixes into the former Santa Fe depot.

Justin Grimmett and Melanie Kraus were named “Athletes of the Year” at the annual athletic awards banquet Thursday evening. Nicki Swift was named most inspirational player on the girls’ basketball team while Grimmett and Sheldon Bina shared the boys’ most inspirational player/honorary captain award.

Announcement was made Friday that the federal government’s Resolution Trust Corporation has been appointed receiver for First Federal Savings Bank of Newton, which also operates branch offices in Marion and Hillsboro.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 366, Hillsboro, will send four girls to Girls’ State this summer. They are Jennifer Blount and Lori Tice, both of Marion, Amy Linnens of Florence, and Debbie Townsend of Hillsboro.

Employees of Marion Unified School District received service awards Monday night as follows: Pauline Edmunds, 40 years; Patricia Jackson, 35 years; Fern Friesen and Lois Anderson, 20 years; Larry Buller and Mary Jeffrey, 15 years; and Bob Good, Shari Padgham, Margie Nienstedt, Beth Rowe, Tommy Thompson, and Jim Versch, 10 years.
