Senator Bob Dole will be in Marion Monday for a grassroots public meeting in the fellowship hall of Eastmoor United Methodist Church. It will be a non-political appearance for the senator to feel the public pulse, get opinions and suggestions, and to answer questions from constituents.

Butler County Community College will operate a student service center in Marion, perhaps starting as soon as November. Located at 201 East Main, the center will house three classrooms, one advising office, and handicapped-accessible restrooms. Building owners Jim and Donna Fruechting are providing all improvements.

Master Photographer Les Broadstreet of Wichita, formerly of Marion, will be offer a large display of photographs for sale on Old Settlers’ Day. One of the many available was taken when Father Emil Kapaun offered his first Mass in Pilsen. People in the photo are Robert Navrat, Eugene Vinduska, Patsy Meysing, Delores Bezdek, Rosemarie Dvorak, Margaret Vinduska, Leonard Navrat, Marion Navrat, Frank Stika, Mrs. Enos Kapaun, Enos Kapaun, the Rev. Emil J. Kapaun, Eugene Kapaun, and Msgr. John Sklenar.

Levi Suderman of Hillsboro planted four pumpkin seeds in May. Only one seed grew. But, it spread out a vine about 40 feet in width and has produced more than a dozen pumpkins, including several that weigh more than 110 pounds.
