The 80th annual celebration of Old Settlers’ Day will be observed Saturday in Marion.

Marion County Commission learned this week from estimates that installing an elevator in the courthouse would cost an estimated $130,000. Installing accessible restrooms, upgrading electrical service, and a handicapped accessible entrance would raise the estimate to $257,000. Commissioners made no decision but will make a grant request for a portion of the cost.

Marion High School football homecoming candidates for 1991 are Lori Tice, Jennifer Vantuyl, Iris Shanklin, John Wheeler, Jason Summerville, and Sam Petersen. Ceremonies are set for halftime of Friday night’s game against Council Grove.

Last year’s successful community Thanksgiving Day meal has encouraged sponsors to host a similar gathering this year.

Larry and Deana Olsen’s Cottonwood Miniature Horses took several top prizes at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Entries in this week’s Produce Derby include a 6½-pound sweet potato shown by Andrew Gayle of Florence. The orange spud is the largest of several grown in the family garden.

It was announced Friday at the Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting that Case and Son Insurance and Hannaford Abstract will co-host a business after-hours gathering at 5 p.m. Oct. 11.
