The 81st annual Old Settlers’ Day celebration officially kicks off Saturday. Theme for the parade is “Pride: Our Cornerstone.”

The bridge that spanned the Cottonwood River on the west side of Marion for decades was replaced by a modern designed structure about a decade ago. The ornamental light fixture from the bridge is now located in Central Park. For many years, the top cross member of the bridge under the light was used by daring high school students as a bulletin board for posting the final score of the annual Warriors rivalry with Hillsboro.

Tiemeier’s Store, Lincolnville, will host its annual Octoberfest Oct. 3. There will be musical programs, a crafts fair, carnival, and food concessions.

Candidates for Marion High School homecoming queen and king are Amanda Janzen, Kristi Kraus, Traci Darrow, Thurston Thies, Micah Hanson, and Shawn Hollon. The coronation ceremony will take place Friday evening during halftime of the Warriors’ football game against league opponent Bluestem.

Marion High School classes planning reunions during the annual Old Settlers’ Day festivities on Saturday are those of 1932, 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972 1982, and 1987.

Three pictures of the Elgin Hotel show its appearance in 1908 and the 1920s and 1930s when it was a popular gathering place for overnight travelers and salesmen know as “drummers.”
