Pilsen State Bank at Lincolnville will sponsor a hog roast and public open house Sept. 16. The hog roast will follow the open house where the public is invited to visit the new facilities of Shawmar Oil Co., the Lincolnville Medical Clinic, and the expanded and remodeled bank.

Coaches in the Cottonwood Valley League pretty well agree that the Chase County Bulldogs is the team to beat this year, with Herington and Council Grove close behind. Marion and Centre seem to have their work cut out for them, as they battle their way near the bottom of the league.

Fourteen teams put their pride on the line Sunday night as they romped their way through Burdick’s “Almost Anything Goes” contest, part of the town’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration.

About two dozen wild greater Canada geese shared the sun and surf Thursday afternoon at the beach at Marion County Lake. Lake Superintendent Dale Snelling said the geese, all of which had identification bands on their legs, probably flew in from a watershed pond in the Flint Hills.

Florence and Burdick were brimming Monday as thousands gathered to help the two towns celebrate Labor Day.
