Merle Bruner, fire chief and city co-foreman, is asking that people not place ash from their fireplace in with their trash. Last year the city’s trash truck was nearly lost when still-hot coals, hidden among ash, started a fire. This seemingly routine act could have caused thousands of dollars in damage or worse.

That old Christmas tree can still serve a useful life. Take your used tree to Don Smith’s service station on East Main and it will be taken, along with others, to the Marion County Lake where it will be used for fish habitat.

The Board of Education of Marion Unified School District will host a reception Jan. 10 for longtime staff member Eugene Enos who is retiring. The reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria of Hill School. All friends, patrons, former students, and others who worked with Enos are invited to attend.

The Harvey House Museum at Florence has a case of “The Harvey House Cookbook” for sale. Bessie Suffield said the book’s author, George H. Foster, sent the museum the case of books.

Pictured is a Muskogee duck that was dumped at Marion County Park and Lake a couple of years ago. Superintendent Dale Snelling says such birds can be a nuisance because they breed fast and are not considered beneficial. “People may think they are pretty, but they’re not desired.” He hopes people will not dispose of unwanted birds at the lake this season.
