Summer has come to an end for school-age students who headed back to classes this week.

Members of the Cottonwood Valley League National Division Championship team, which ended its season 13-2, include John Ottensmeier, Adam Turner, Jim Helmer, Dalton Freeman, Kirk Buckner, Justin Hett, Curtis Gore, Josh Tajchman, Roger Weathersbee, Kelen Bombardier, Scott Hannaford, David Darrow, Cole Freeman, and Keith Goentzel. Coaches are Greg Regier, Roger Hannaford III, and Jim Darrow. Michael Darrow was team batboy.

The annual Marion Chamber of Commerce picnic is 6:30 p.m. Friday at Marion Country Club.

Wedding write-ups in this week’s edition include those of Marcia Bergkamp and Tom Costello on July 24, Sheri Engler and Carl Schmidt on July 17, and Jennifer Unruh and John Bauers on June 12.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Schafers returned early Monday from Denver, Colorado, where they attended Mass Sunday morning by Pope John Paul II.

The courthouse may go back to its original slate roof, if possible funding comes through. From 1906 to 1971, the courthouse had a black slate roof. It was removed and asphalt shingles laid down. However, the roof must now be replaced because the shingles are breaking down. Heritage trust funds could be used to make up the difference in price between asphalt and slate if an application for funds is approved.
