Sledders and snow enthusiasts shunned the Elm Street hill this week, even though it had been blocked off for their pleasure. Instead, they thronged to the north slope of the Luta Creek Crossing for fun in the snow.

The first baby born at St. Luke Hospital in 1984 is Dustin David Suffield, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Suffield of Lincolnville. Dustin was born at 8:47 a.m. Jan. 3.

Mike Shields has joined the staff of the Marion County Record. He replaces Pat Fox, who has accepted a position with the Hutchinson News. Shields is a graduate of Wichita State University. He has been on the staff of the Ark Valley News at Valley Center for several months.

A year ago, many Marionites were united to save the old oak tree along the banks of the Luta at Elm and Main. That noble effect ended well. The tree is a living memorial. It was one of the best things that happened in ’83.

Sarah Penner, St. Luke Hospital administrator, presented service awards for 1983 Dec. 17 at the annual Christmas party. Receiving awards were: Peg Edwardson, Maureen Phillips, and Patti Thomas, five years; Agnes Pecinovsky, Belva Pine, and Tillie Schafers, 10 years; Jean Bailey, Bula Good, Dorothy Hayward, Catherine Hein, Sarah Penner, Irene Ratzloff, Katherin Roberts, Lou Roberts, Esther Sanders; Millie Summervill and Billie Wheeler, 15 years.
