330th landowners
to discuss widening

Staff writer

A public meeting for 23 landowners with property along an eight-mile stretch of 330th Rd. is planned for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at Durham Community Center.

At issue is whether residents care whether the long-troublesome road between K-15 and McPherson County needs ditches and shoulders at the same time the surface is redone.

The county plans to rebuild the road from foundation to surface because it has been in bad condition for years.

“We want to get a feel for whether they have enough interest in having shoulders and ditches,” county clerk Tina Spencer said.

If the 23 landowners with property along the road want shoulders and ditches added, the county plans to obtain the rights-of-way to widen the road.

Darin Neufeld of EBH Engineering sent letters to the landowners Tuesday.

Neufeld said he would check what utilities would be involved in adding shoulders and ditches.

Adding shoulders and ditches might affect one cemetery. Friedenstal Cemetery lies on 330th between Bison and Chisholm Rds. County officials said they would work around any graves within the widened right-or-way.

Commissioners earlier hired Terracon, a geotechnical consulting firm, to bore test holes into the road to see what Terracon would recommend for repairing the road.

Neufeld gave the report to commissioners Monday.

“They want a 12-inch base using cement slurry and three-inch asphalt over it,” Neufeld said.

Commissioners told Neufeld to prepare bid specifications for the roadwork.

If landowners want the road to have shoulders and ditches, that’s a decision that will have to be made soon, Spencer said.
