September 3, 1975

Eleven classmates and two former teachers from the class of 1930 gathered in Marion Saturday to celebrate the 45th anniversary of graduation from Marion High School. Bob Keazer served as master of ceremonies for the reunion.

It was 100 years ago today, Sept. 3, 1875, that the city of Marion was born by election and with the name Marion Centre. Today, Sept. 3, 1975, marks the day when Marion ends its first century and moves on to greater glories.

Mrs. Ernest Bezdek of rural Lincolnville brought in a 17½-pound cantaloupe for this week’s Produce Derby. Two years ago, she had one that weighed 20 pounds. She says there is another larger one still in the patch this year.

The Marion Parent-Teacher Association is asking that the public cooperate in their effort to collect coupons from various Colgate-Palmolive soap products. Purpose of the collections is to provide a 16mm movie projector and large 10x12 screen that may be used by the PTA.

Across the City of Marion, with many stately old homes still in excellent repair and graciously used, pillars of old stone still stand. Often they are alongside a huge block of stone cut with steps on one side and a platform on top to be used in getting into a carriage, buggy, or sidesaddle. Surely, no place has saved more of these relics than Marion has.
