Last week was the tenth anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon and also of the tragedy at Chappaquiddick. Both were significant events in history.

Marion County Commissioners approved a request on Monday by County Park and Lake Superintendent Dale Snelling to release 100 Asian grass carp fish into Marion County Lake. The fish would be dropped along a fenced-off area of stone arch cove. This fish eats moss, that’s all.

The second annual July Jamboree was held in Marion Saturday morning. Pictured are Amy Hett, third place adult clown; Stephanie Summerville, third place children’s division clown; Kay Lynn Summervill, first place children’s division clown; Georgie Vogel, best dressed adult clown; and “kissing bandit” Janice Case, second place adult clown.

Announced in this issue are upcoming golden wedding anniversary celebrations of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Merrill and Mr. and Mrs. Merle F. Smith, both of Marion, and Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Haizlip of Aurora, Missouri.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Belton of Tampa are the parents of a daughter, Emily Nicolle, born July 3 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton.

This week’s Produce Derby entries include a 2 pound 11 ounce Detroit Dark Red Beet, grown by Cecil Slifer in his vegetable garden south of Marion.
