An estimated 2,000 persons attended the open house of Elgin House Apartments Sunday afternoon, taking advantage of a balmy spring day and an opportunity to view the project which has received national acclaim during recent months.

The eagerly anticipated opening of Marion’s branch office of First Federal Savings will be this Monday. The new facilities are located at 230 East Main, at the intersection of Main and Third streets. Marjean Davison of Halstead is branch coordinator. Branch manager will be Sally Helmer.

Jeanette Gerritzen, bride-elect of George Jackson, was guest of honor Monday evening at a kitchen shower at the Dean C. Batt residence.

Trophy winners in the Marion County Spelling Bee at Marion Elementary School last Wednesday were Michelle Smith, first, and Gwen Stucky, second. Both girls are students at Burns Elementary School.

Marion High School basketball players chosen for the Cottonwood Valley 1977 all-league basketball team are Brad Heerey and Gary Boyle, both seniors. Gary Hett received honorable mention.

The City of Marion is cracking down on dogs. The city commission, on Monday, passed a new ordinance calling for impoundment of dogs running at large. The city police will catch such animals. Ones with valid city licenses will be held for 72 hours. If the dog is not claimed, it will be destroyed. Dogs not properly licensed will be “destroyed on sight” according to the ordinance.
