Fire engines, tankers and jeeps from Florence, Marion, Peabody, Hillsboro, Elmdale, Cedar Point, Matfield Green, Herington, Newton and several vehicles from Strait Ranch answered a call Saturday afternoon to a fire which started west of U.S. 77 a mile south of Florence, jumped the highway and spread eastward burning over three square miles of grasslands.

Frank and Lorraine Havlik, owners of the Mainliner Motel, near the east end of Main Street in Marion, are the subjects in this week’s “Personality Profile.”

This week’s Produce Derby features JoAnn Nowak of Pilsen, who grew an 8½-pound cantaloupe, and D.H. Paul’s “yard-long” beans that grew only to 30 inches this year.
