A violent storm with heavy rain and hurricane force winds caused widely scattered damage this past weekend in Marion County. Lake residents bore the brunt of the storm. The city merely caught a glancing blow with downed power lines and trees.

Lively plans for a fun-filled Old Settlers’ Day were outlined at the Friday meeting of Marion Chamber of Commerce. It was announced the theme “Marion, A Pacemaker City” would be followed throughout the day.

A come and go shower held Sept. 14 at the home of Betty Laue honored Kay Blackman, bride-elect of Charles Tajchman.

Monica Klenda of Lincolnville was one of 520 students who paddled down the Kaw River Sept. 9-10 in the annual canoe race between the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.

If you see a bright red Plymouth Volare motoring down a street or country road with no one behind the wheel, look again. It is probably Harold Keazer, rural mail carrier, in his new, inventive vehicle designed expressly for convenience in serving rural mailboxes.

Members of the Rube Band, who need to practice, should pick up their music at Jackson’s Clothing Store. Others will practice as they march down Main Street on Old Settlers’ Day.
