Pictured on the front page are the five finalists in the Groundhog Queen competition. Gerry Harris introduced the sweat hogs, Dandy Andy Ferrell, Legs Rex Wilson, Bubbles “Plasterer” Larry Loomis, Goggles Ron Cork, and Legal Eagle Eddie Wheeler. Legs Wilson won by a whisker. Cork was first runner-up. Ground Hog Mel Honeyfield and his shadow, Jami Keller, escorted each contestant to the reviewing stand.

A “first dollar of profit” plaque was presented this week to Mr. and Mrs. Merle Bruner, owners of Bruner Jewelry and Gift. Presenting the certificate for the Chamber of Commerce were Pat Nuss and Leland Heidebrecht.

Mike Fruechting and Scott Miesse, both 1978 graduates of Marion High School, are participating in the Kansas State University’s short course for young farmers. The two-month program ends March 7, with 56 enrolled.

Mike Steinel, native of Marion and acclaimed jazz musician, will be the featured artist when the Marion High School music department and the Marion Community Arts Council cooperate to provide a concert Tuesday. Steinel is the son of former MHS instrumental music director Conrad Steinel and school librarian Lois Steinel.
