The old Creamery Bridge on Commercial Street is gone, but a new culvert-type structure will take its place. Tom Grosse is building the new crossing for the City of Marion. It will give access to town and the co-op elevator for farmers living southeast and open up the shortest route to Marion County Lake.

Joan Bowers has been hired as city clerk. She will replace Lucille Britain who has resigned effective April 19. Bowers presently is employed as a secretary in the office of School Superintendent John Wiebe.

Governor John Carlin this week appointed Melvin M. Gradert of Newton as the new Associate District Judge for Marion County District Court. Gradert will fill the vacant position caused by the resignation of Judge Edwin G. Westerhaus on Jan. 1.

The marriage of Carolyn Huigens and Rex Savage was solemnized Feb. 16 in the Florence Christian Church. Rev. Lester Owens officiated at the single ring ceremony.

“Bachelor of Square Dancing” degrees from the “College of Do Si Dos and Allemande Lefts” were received March 11 by 21 students who completed the prescribed courses in “fun, friendliness and good fellowship” under Bud Pierce, caller.

Marion High School’s representatives to Girls’ State this summer will be Gena Helmer, Jan Nuss, and Debbie Rittgers. Alternates are Linda Williams and Joan Hiebert.
