The benefit auction and bake sale for East Park, held Saturday at Longhofer Supply, fell short of the goal of $1,000. Final figures indicated just under $700 passed into the park fund.

Dr. John Slifer will be honored and recognized for his 45 years of faithful service to the Florence community when a reception will be held Saturday in the Florentine Senior Center.

Marion High School basketball boys named to the All Cottonwood Valley League teams last week in coaches’ balloting were Brian Allen, Kevin Jirak, Greg Boyle, and Aaron Hett. Girls named were Jami Shirley, first team; Lori Hett, second team; and Linda Williams, honorable mention.

Marion Community Chorus will present Handel’s “Messiah” Sunday evening in the sanctuary of Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Soloists will be Ruth Friesen, soprano, of Hillsboro; Dana Circle, alto, of Wichita; Jeff Brewer, tenor, Marion; and Wes Loewen, bass, Hillsboro.

Students honored Monday night at the annual Kiwanis Honor Banquet for perfect 4.0 grade point averages were Ann Bryant, Jan Bryant, Theresa Kroupa, Beth Regier, Linda Schaffer, Greg Boyle, Paul Loney, Deb Rittgers, Ron Wineinger, Donna Berg, Alice Hockensmith, Loreen Wiens, Stan Williams, Cindy Heerey, Marty Kroupa, Lisa Richmond, Linda Robinson, and Becky Vinduska.
