Mayor Peggy Blackman started her second three-year term of office Monday afternoon by making routine appointments. Mayor Blackman also named Joan Bowers city clerk, for a two-year term beginning Friday. Bowers replaces Lucille Britain who has resigned.

Governor John Carlin hosted State Senator John Crofoot and his pages on Thursday in the Capitol at Topeka. The four girls, Loreen Wiens, Mickey Costello, Loraine Wiens, and Ramona Zeller, are students at Marion High School.

Florence Women’s Christian Temperance Union announces winners in the essay contest conducted among students at Florence Middle School. Linda Loney, M.D., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Loney of Marion, has accepted a faculty position in ambulatory pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
