Marion is getting a reputation around Kansas for being the community to watch, setting the pace for others to follow. Now the town is being used as a “pilot project” by the Kansas Department of Economic Development for a study on industrial development, tourism promotion and commercial development.

Ron Wineinger of Marion was elected governor of America Legion Boys’ State during the past week at Lawrence. Wineinger, 17, is the first Marion representative—and for that matter, the first small-town representative—in recent memory, to be elected governor, said Chuck Nelson, a Boys’ State official.

Births announced this week include: Melissa Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Carr of Wichita, born May 30; Michel David, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard R. Morse, Springfield, Ill., born June 2; and Ross Matthew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Groening of Marion, born June 4.

Fiddlers and pluckers had a grand time at Marion County Lake the past weekend. About 200 people came to listen and tap their toes to the music of “Bluegrass in the Park” both Friday and Saturday nights.

Don Bredemeier and Jim Richmond placed in the top 10 Saturday at Pawnee Prairie Golf Course in Wichita and qualified for sectionals competition in the Kansas Long Drive championships, date to be announced.
