A steady flow of metal was loaded into the Coors aluminum recycling truck in Dave’s IGA parking lot Wednesday. The aluminum drive, sponsored by Debauge Bros. Inc., Emporia, paid 25 cents per pound for aluminum and one cent each for every Coors beer glass bottle.

Kris Kelsey, 16, is pictured on the front page as she gives change to Tate McCarty, 15, after his purchase of some bottle rockets at a downtown fireworks stand. Business was slow at first, she said, but has been picking up as the holiday draws near.

Cindy Novak, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Novak of Lost Springs, recently was flag bearer for the Kansas State University marching band on its trip to London, England. She was among 325 K-State students who battled final exams on a jet while crossing the Atlantic Ocean to play at the English Football Association’s soccer cup final.

The seventh birthday of Sheldon Bina was celebrated June 28 at a party in Central Park planned by his mother, Mrs. Martin Bina. Invited guests were Tim Makovec, Kent Mitchell, Glenn Krispense, Matt Peterson, Gary Klose, David Whitcomb, Jason Bernhardt, Chad Christensen, Chris Stinchcomb, Chris Hett, Mike Kline, Daniel Burton and Brian Crofoot.

Amy Hett is the Marion County Record’s Player of the Week. She earned the designation by pitching a two-hitter against Peabody and by batting .667.
