Even the clowns couldn’t keep from frowning occasionally as their makeup melted in the sizzling Saturday sun at the July Jamboree. More than 30 clowns participated in the parade. Bill Pickering, in the 18 and older division, won the prize for best clown costume with his old-time policeman outfit. Scott Heidebrecht won in the 12-17 division. The number one clown in the one- to 11-year-old group was Jessica Ash.

An article by Ruth Meyer, special feature writer, tells of the wrecker service at Cedar Point where men, know-how and equipment put the Carpenter Garage in the top bracket of such service. Pictured are owners Gus Carpenter and his son Gerald Carpenter.

Doug Westerhaus has been named chairman of the Kansas Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Committee.

Mike Kelsey is the Marion County Record Player of the Week. In the past week, Kelsey pitched a no-hitter, a two hitter, and had 11 strikeouts in 12 innings. He also hit consistently, getting at least one single in each game.

Jan Nuss, Gena Helmer, and Kim Schaffer will be this year’s Marion entries in the upcoming Junior Miss pageant that will be held Monday and Tuesday in the Herington Elementary School gymnasium.
