Gena Helmer of Marion won the title of 1980 Tri-County Junior Miss at Monday’s pageant in Herington. Helmer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Helmer and will be a senior this fall at Marion High School. Jan Nuss, also of Marion, was second runner-up in the pageant.

Marion will host the District Babe Ruth tournament for 14- and 15-year-olds this year with action beginning Thursday at the ballpark.

Write-ups in this issue tell of showers honoring future brides Lori Schmidtberger, Lori Kelsey, and Jeanne Koslowsky.

Marion Merchants women’s softball team swept Lost Springs twice during the past week. In the first game, Carol Colburn led in the hitting department, going five-for-five with two home runs and five RBIs. In the second game, Janice Bowers had four RBIs including a triple and a home run.

Mrs. Bob Kelly brought in the biggest tomato to the Marion County Record produce derby this week. It weighed in at 18.5 ounces. Kelly said she grew the tomato plant from seeds.

Ron Cork, St. Luke Hospital administrator, spoke at the Kiwanis meeting Monday and outlined details that lead up to plans for a physician’s clinic to be built near the hospital.

Local members of MHS Class of 1965 met recently at the home of Mrs. Ralph Richmond to plan their 1960 reunion, which will be held on Old Settlers’ Day, Sept 25.
