The American Legion and VFW auxiliaries will conduct an emergency preparedness-training meeting that will be open to the public on Jan. 20.

Members of Marion Chamber of Commerce heard a presentation Friday on downtown revitalization. The town is the first community in Kansas to be studied by the planning division of the Kansas Department of Economic Development (KDED). The proposal is in six areas: land use, transportation, streetscape, furniture, plantings, public spaces, storefronts, and community art.

A short story, “Begin a Bright Morning,” by Virleen Bailey of Ramona, placed first in the 1980 Kansas Extension Homemakers Council short story contest. A May 1980 graduate of Tabor College, she is employed by Tabor as a secretary and a tutor in Biology and English.

Alma Jean Wiebe was honored at a retirement party Tuesday to mark 17 years service to the county. Pictured among those who dropped by to pay their respects are Lois Johnson and Vera Highsmith.

A trio composed of Donna Hayen, Feebie Smith, and Sharon Lundgren entertained Kiwanians Monday. They sang Christmas selections and accompanied themselves with their guitars.
