Several with entries in this week’s Marion County Record Produce Derby are pictured on page one. Included were a nine-pound cabbage raised by Mrs. George Vinduska, a 1¼-pound tomato grown by Lilly and Lucy Guerra, daughters of Dr. and Mrs. Tomas Guerra, two 2½-pound cucumbers and a 2¾-pound tomato brought by Ramie, 4, and Nikki, 2, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bina of Lincolnville.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Frank Boyle and Robert Craft are pictured on the front page getting ready to go on patrol. Boyle will be breaking in Craft during the next six weeks then he returns to Salina for another six-week session. Craft eventually will be stationed in Marion.

Ruth Zinn has sold her mercantile store and café at Lost Springs after 11½ years of serving the public at that location. The new owners, Garland and Barbara Cook of Lost Springs, have re-named the business “The Cook Shack.”

Noriko Ono of Osaka, Japan, is one of 147 Japanese high school students chosen for a month-long visit to America. A participant in the 4-H LABO International exchange program, Noriko will be living with her hosts, the Gerry Harris family.

Over 300 persons, from five different states, spent Saturday at Jim Donahue’s Hayhook Ranch, northeast of Marion, to learn more about the Brangus breed at the Brangus Inspection Seminar and Field Day.
