The welcome mat is always out in Marion on the last Saturday in September because it’s Old Settlers’ Day. The celebration this year will be the 70th such event. Its theme this year is “Kansas — Land of Adventure” and should feature float designs typifying historical struggles.

The City of Marion agreed to the concept of industrial revenue bonds to finance an expanded Goodyear Tire Service retail store when they met in regular session Monday afternoon.

Ron Cork, administrator at St. Luke Hospital, led a tour of the hospital district’s newly opened medical clinic Friday at the regular monthly meeting of the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Service awards, in appreciation of their years of devoted duty to the school district, were presented last week to Patsy Waner, 10 years; Lois Anderson, 10 years; Ella Winter, 25 years; and Pauline Edmunds, 30 years.

Norma Riggs of Marion has been voted “Woman of the Year” by the Marion chapter of Business and Professional Women. Riggs is the chapter’s fourth “Woman of the Year” recipient.

Noreen Weems, Department for Elderly director, reported to the county commission this week that all senior center nutrition sites would serve meals five days a week beginning Oct. 1.
