Marion County road and bridge crewmen were dispatched to Florence Monday after three days of steady rains had fed a giant log jam at the city’s’ Fifth Street bridge. The log jam had gained more debris over the weekend, and by Sunday night, water in the Cottonwood River had risen to just beneath the bridge.

Centre Homecoming King Tom Eskeldon got a surprise he hadn’t counted on Friday — two queens. Balloting for homecoming queen came down to a tie for first place between Linda Albrecht and Jackie Nowak

A Saturday morning fire destroyed a one-story home, the Donald Hasenback residence at 802 Sherman. Firemen were notified of the blaze when Leroy Burton spotted smoke pouring from the house as he was driving by. Burton dashed into the house and awakened a man, cousin of the owner, who was sleeping in the bedroom,

First Federal held a Halloween party for Youth Club members who, earlier, had been given seeds to grow pumpkins. Kris Widler was the winner of the “biggest around pumpkin” award; Fred and Meggan Silhan, the largest, 80 pounds; Becky and Kelley Kelsey, tallest; and Brian and Carrie Wunderlick, smallest.

An open house has been scheduled for Sunday at World Impact’s vocational training center, 4.5 miles east of Florence. The center provides training to young people from ghetto sections of large cities.
