J.L. “Les” Fruechting was elected chairman of the Marion County Planning Commission Thursday night at the commissioners’ monthly meeting in Marion. Fruechting replaces Jack Whisler, who is stepping down after four years at the helm. Whisler said he hopes the group will remain active in county planning.

Gary Schuler has taken over as district conservationist for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Marion County. Schuler, 29, took over Nov. 15 from retiring Al Gantz.

More than 500 steaks were served in less than three hours at the annual Farm City Steak Fry Monday night.

Richard Britain, 27, of Marion, was recently honored for superior achievement during the past year by the U.S. Postal Department. The $250 award recognizes efficiency, reliability, and dedication, according to Marion postmaster Larry Gultz. Britain has been employed with the Marion post office for the past four years.

The 1982 Marion basketball squad has grown from pint-size to a height surprise and boasts eight players over six feet in height this year. They are Tim Richmond, 6’3”; Tim Jirak, 6’; Randy Kelsey and Matt Wineinger, each 6’1”; and Julian Seaman, 6’4”. Fans will get their first look at the squad Saturday in the traditional soap scrimmage exhibition game.
