Ice and snow paralyzed the county Wednesday and numerous accidents occurred. Long distance telephone service to Marion was out from Wednesday until late Thursday and the radio in the Marion County Sheriff’s office was out for three or four hours Wednesday, leaving Marion completely isolated from the rest of the world.

Dick Bredemeier was the biggest winner Saturday when 20 lucky Marion shoppers were awarded Christmas bonus certificates, good as cash in any Marion store. Bredemeier’s certificate was good for $25. Other winners were Gladys Queen, $15; Paula Edmunds, Vivian Conyers, Evelyn Bredemeier, Ruby Laudner, Ida Kelsey, Judy Grentz, Mrs. Francis Meirowsky and Shirley Groening, all $10 each; Cherry Hart, Bulah Weigart, Bonnie Schmidt, Doris Maltbie, Francis Meirowsky, Ann Foth, Herb Hett, Leonard Pettit, Earl Morse and Opal Winters, $5 each.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hett of rural Marion announce the engagement of their daughter, Melinda, to Kendall Helmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Helmer, Marion. A May wedding is planned.

Elmer Ottensmeier, Marion, won first prize in the annual Marion County Record subscription contest this year. His prize was a new Smith Corona typewriter. Fred Moffitt, former Tampa postmaster, won the Victor electric adding machine. And, Paul Murphy, Tampa, won the third prize, an Eldon desk set.
