4 days of jazz planned for students Grades 1 to 12

Musical act Metta Quintet will perform a variety of popular and historic jazz numbers accompanied by live narration and multimedia presentations over a four-day program for students Monday through April 2 at McPherson Opera House.

First and second grades can experience the interactive program “Hangin’ with the Giants,” which features animated likenesses of jazz greats Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Third and fourth grades can take in the globally themed multimedia program “Big Drum/Small World” that focuses on music from jazz composers in West Africa, Israel, Cuba, and the United States.

Grades 5 and 6 can learn about the legacy of jazz composer, pianist, and band leader Duke Ellington during “Ellington” a multimedia presentation.

Middle and high schoolers can traverse trumpeter, bandleader, and cultural provocateur Miles Davis in “Miles Davis and the Blue Flame Incident.”

Grades 7 and 8 can get up to speed on jazz history in “Stolen Moments: The First 100 Years of Jazz.”

Grades 9 through 12 can also learn about important achievements of female jazz artists in “She said/She Says: The History and Status of Women in Jazz.”
