The contest for the title of “Centennial Queen,” gained through distribution and sale of advance coupon tickets to the historical pageant, “From Hope to Heritage,” concluded Monday. Results revealed at the Coronation Ball Tuesday night proclaimed Jean Holmes as Centennial Queen. Following closely in order were Mary Ann Avery, Gerry Hett, Dorothy Youk, Louise Wood, and Betty Medley. The six will be presented each night as a preliminary to the pageant.

The first annual Pinewood Derby was held in Marion July 27 with 15 entries. In the final heat, “Phantom Black Car” driven by Terry Plenert crossed the finish line first. Second place went to Maurice Allen’s Green Goblin. “Blue Eleven” driven by John Scott, a newcomer to Scouts, was third.

A “time capsule” to be placed underground in front of the historical museum Saturday, is one of the highlights of Old Settlers’ Centennial.

Everett Burkhead, Marion’s personable and amazing sightless friend of all, returned last week from a seven-week stay in Kansas City where he attended summer school at the Kansas School for the Blind.
