One of the familiar buildings in Marion, the old Rock Island Depot is rapidly being razed this week. Its replacement is an all-metal, streamlined building.

Wilbur Melcher received word this week that his application for transfer from government civil service in the Soil Conservation Service to the Rural Mail Carrier Service has been approved.

This week the Wickman Book Bindery of Wichita is putting new canvas jackets on some of the books in the Register of Deeds office.

Seventh grade mothers served the annual 8th grade banquet May 7 in an Oriental setting. Bruce Powell served as master of ceremonies for the event. Neva Kelsey welcomed the eighth graders and Max Jackson gave the response. Entertainment was provided by Geisha Girls and Miss Cherry Blossom. Those participating in the program were Anita Schick, Melody Thompson, Carol Cowan, Barbara Christensen, Connie Jost, and Neva Kelsey.

Emil J. Tajchman, Lincolnville, missed $50 in this week’s Cash Day drawing. John Schick, Tampa received $15; Hattie Henke, Lost Springs, missed $10; Susie Allen, Peabody, received $15; and Melvin E. Krause, Lincolnville, missed $10.

Each year an award is given to the girl and the boy having the nicest handwriting among graduates of the rural schools. Winning this year’s girl’s honor was Sandra Winkley of the Spring Branch neighborhood.

Row crop planting is nearing completion and wheat is beginning to head out. Weeds are the best crop so far this year.
