An explosion, thought to have been caused by a gas leak, literally demolished the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Helmer at 220 Walnut Wednesday afternoon about 5:30. Mrs. Helmer was hospitalized with painful, but not serious burns. All four Helmer children were in the house at the time. They were “shook up” but not injured.
Dale Snelling of Florence was named supervisor or superintendent of the Marion County Park and Lake Friday evening at a special meeting of the county commissioners and park and lake board.
Big league baseball reached down into Marion County this summer and signed one of the area’s most promising young ball players, Robert Klein of Durham. The St. Louis Cardinals has signed Robert for an outfield position, and he is due to report for spring training next spring.
The 6-week Marion City Bowling Association handicap match play tournament wound up Saturday with Matt Classen in the coveted first place spot. In second place was Pete Klein, followed by Spencer Bevan and Wilbert Backhus. There was a four-way tie for fifth place between Bob Hoover, Gene Winkler, Reuben Zerger and Will Wray.
