Wharton Hoch met with the members of the Marion City Commission this week and told of plans for a proposed decorative water fountain in the city park. The commission stated a committee would be appointed to look into the fountain possibility.

The talented group of instructors who handled this year’s Red Cross sponsored swimming lessons are pictured on this week’s front page. Those involved are Helen Jackson, LaVonda Hett, Jackie Thomas, Pattie Plenert, Roma Roebke, Judy Pankratz, Nancy Klenda, Susan Yeagley and Jean Morse.

Judy Pankratz and Cherri Bell, high school girls who recently attended Girls’ State in Lawrence, were speakers at Kiwanis Monday noon.

Marion Boy Scouts of Troop 102 won the top honor, “Best Troop of the Encampment” at the recent Quivira Council encampment at Camp Ta-Wa-Ko-Ni near Augusta. Members of the troop are Mike Steinel, Dick Wiebe, Jim Mayginnes, Steve Fillip, Raymon Mayginnes, Chuck McElwain, Billy Finke, Mike Bredemeier, Dick Carr, Eddie Cook, Maurice Allen, Lance Alexander and Craig Smith.

The Marion women’s softball team lost their first game of the season Friday night by the score of 16 to 15 in a thrilling game against Roxbury. The women will try to avenge their defeat by traveling to Roxbury for a game this Friday night.
