A tragic accident Monday at the construction site of the Marion Dam and Reservoir took the life of a widely known and well-liked Marion man, Frank J. Maloun, He died instantly in a fall from a movable platform being used for cement finishing work on the west wall of the 3-section reservoir spillway.

Miss Eileen Pavey, bride-elect of Skip Sieger, was guest of honor Friday evening at a bridal shower at the Youngtown Church basement.

Marion Elementary School held its second annual “Field Day” Thursday with a lot of fun in the form of track and field competition by all students of the school. Over 800 student entries were recorded in the 99 events that took place on that day.

Principal James Weinmann announced an unusual situation at the commencement exercises Tuesday evening. There were two students having perfect 4-year records, creating two valedictorian awards. The first went to Linda Loney with record of never having a grade other than “A” on her transcript. Also with a straight “A” record and the second valedictorian was Cathy Palmer. Close behind, with only one “B’ on his record, Norman Ray Mueller was named salutatorian. The coveted Balfour Award for general all-around excellence went to Rebecca Herrick.

Harold Bell of Marion was elected Department Vice-Commander of the American Legion for the state of Kansas at the department convention held during the past weekend in Topeka.
